Stratford House

An inter-denominational cooperative Christian house for undergraduate women, funded by University Baptist Church - Baptist Housing Ministry.

Stratford House, as stated in the House Constitution, was organized "for the purpose of living cooperatively in Christian fellowship, of learning to live and grow in Christian life, and of learning to accept responsibility for individual and group living." Because the house is a cooperative, members all work together in cooking and cleaning. They each work about four hours per week, and there are work days before the beginning of each semester - "spring cleaning" for Stratford House. Cooking, cleaning, and care of the house provide excellent opportunities for members to get to know each other and to know Christ by working together to keep Stratford beautiful. Stratford House has a reciprocal agreement with University residence halls, so in many cases it is possible to transfer to Stratford without penalty. Because of its cooperative nature, Stratford costs about a third less than living in the dorms! What do we do?

  • Within the house are Bible studies, prayer partners, and occasional spontaneous fellowship activities. To support physical development, we participate in intramural sports. For social growth, we have activities like parties, dances, concerts, and Big Brother exchanges with Koinonia.
  • Our family atmosphere is fostered by eating lunches and dinners together.
Being a cooperative means sharing in the cooking and cleaning duties. On average this requires about seven hours of work each week. Work routines are flexible and planned around class schedules. In addition to learning practical skills in cooking, cleaning, and maintenance, house members take a certain ownership in Stratford House. Because the housework is shared, housing costs are typically about 80% of comparable accommodations in university residence halls.
