Koinonia

An Christian cooperative house for undergraduate men sponsored and staffed by the Baptist Housing Ministry.

Koinonia is at 308 E. Daniel St. in Champaign, just a few doors west of University Baptist Church. It is a Christian house for thirty-seven undergraduate men attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Koinonia was envisioned by members of University Baptist Church in 1952 and continues as an integral part of the housing ministry. Koinonia provides an opportunity to experience firsthand the joys of Christian brotherhood with those of many different denominations. The diversity of this Christian community engenders a more illustrious, multi-faceted vision. The unity of Koinonia, which literally means "fellowship," contributes to the home-like atmosphere and mark of distinguished character. What do we do?

  • Within the house are Bible studies, prayer partners, and occasional spontaneous fellowship activities.
  • To support physical development, we participate in intramural sports.
  • For social growth, we have activities like parties, dances, spelunking, paintball, concerts, dinner exchanges, and male bonding events.
  • We also enjoy the fellowship of our sisters in Christ from Stratford House, which is just next door.
  • Our family atmosphere is fostered by eating lunches and dinners together.
Being a cooperative means sharing in the cooking and cleaning duties. On average this requires about seven hours of work each week. Work routines are flexible and planned around class schedules. In addition to learning practical skills in cooking, cleaning, and maintenance, house members take a certain ownership in Koinonia. Because the housework is shared, housing costs are typically about 80% of comparable accommodations in university residence halls.

More benefits of Koinonia:

  • Ideal location four blocks from the Quad, two blocks from Campustown, and directly on the main campus bus route.
  • Direct Internet access to the University computer system.
  • Younger members benefit both academically and socially from the knowledge and experience of older members.
  • Twenty meals per week with open use of the kitchen.
  • Basketball hoop, parking next to the house, pool table, free weight workout area.
  • Fourteen elected house positions that provide for leadership in the self-governing the house.
  • Adult house mentor for advice on spiritual and other personal needs.
